Be a Mentor
Make a difference in the life of a young man - be a MENTOR!
The Omaha Home for boys is looking for adults who have a strong desire to work with a young man and are willing to commit to a mentoring relationship. Mentoring positively impacts school success, teen pregnancy rates, criminal acts and violent behavior. For residents at the Omaha Home for Boys, being mentored is also a chance for a young man to receive individual attention from a caring adult and, most importantly, a chance to just have fun!
What does it take to be a mentor?
- Be twenty-one years of age or older.
- Have the desire to help a young person, have fun, and develop a positive and healthy relationship with a young person.
- Make a weekly phone call to the youth (calls can be brief -most kids prefer that anyway. Calls are not ‘therapy sessions’. Just a check-in with the youth once a week).
- Engage in 2 mentor/youth outings per month in the community. No time requirements on the length of outings. Sometimes an hour is fine to go and get a hamburger. Other times it’s fine to spend the entire day together (working in the yard and grilling out or some other activities in the community).
- Completion of an application, interview/orientation (approx. 1 hour), and background check.
- Attend a 3 hour pre-match New Mentor Training at OHB. Other ongoing trainings are offered.
- Receive ongoing support and case management from the Program Coordinator –who is always available for tips and guidance for mentors during the life of their match.

CORPORATE PARTNERS:
Are you looking for ways to boost employee morale? Do you want to increase employee satisfaction and loyalty? Do you want to give something back to your community?
Many businesses in the city are offering employee flex-time off for time spent mentoring as a means to provide support for local youth. In the process, their own employees benefit as much as the youth they serve. Mentors help improve the self-esteem and life prospects of the young people who will one day take their place in the workforce.
As if the benefits to employees are not enough, businesses are also benefiting from mentoring in other ways as well. Companies have found that they have improved their image in the community and increased community awareness of their mission by offering employee flex-time off for mentoring.
